Workshop Objectives

Accessibility is one of the key areas of consideration in modern websites, with complex legislative and user issues to consider. The existing guidelines can be difficult to interpret, however there are real measurable benefits to improving website accessibility. This is a practical and interactive workshop aimed at teaching how to implement accessibility guidelines.

What You Will Achieve At the End of the Workshop

Participants will learn the concepts behind websites accessibility and how to put these into practice. They will be aware of the potential legal implications of inaccessible website design and how accessible sites can bring benefits to the organization and to all site users, including those with disabilities.

Workshop Contents

  1. Introduction to Acccessibility
    What is accessibility and what does it mean for a website?
    Learn what accessibility is, who it affects, and what are the negative and positive impacts it can have.

  2. Accessing the Web
    What is device independence and why is it important?
    Learn about the different devices that can be used to access the web, including specialist assistive technologies used by people with disabilities.

  3. The Guidelines
    What guidelines are in place and what they consist of?
    Both the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the United States Section 508 Guidelines will be explained in outline.

  4. Putting the Guidelines into Practice
    How do I improve the accessibility of my website?
    All Priority 1 and the most significant Priority 2 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines will be discussed in detail. This section of the workshop is highly practical. The participants see how different site elements can cause accessibility problems and learn how to prepare web pages without these problems.

  5. Accessibility Tools
    Accessibility evaluation tools and how to use them.
    There are several accessibility evaluation tools that can be used to assist in the accessibility improvement process. Learn what these tools are, and how to use them. More importantly, learn what these tools can and cannot measure.

  6. Ensuring Site Accessibility
    What are the most effective ways of ensuring site accessibility?
    Learn how to monitor the accessibility of a website during development and how to avoid simple accessibility problems that can be very costly to rectify after the site is completed.

Workshop Methodology

The workshop delivery style is very hands-on and practically focused. It uses a mixture of:

  • Learning through examples of good and bad accessibility
  • Case Studies
  • Practical exercises with accessibility tools
