Online Car Configurator Project

Background

Our client wants to develop a new configurator and would like to learn more about people configuring cars in the web.

More about the Car Configurator

Car configurators are tools on the websites of car manufacturers which potential clients can use to build a customized car online. With such a tool users can try out and select different options for different car models of the manufacturer. These options can be colours, motorisation, different interiors and more. Users can immediately see the results of your configuration as an image on the screen, check the recommended price for the car they configured and use even more options.

Objectives

Objective of the test is to anticipate future usage in order to be able to develop the new configurator according to the needs of the users in China and to minimise costs of development. Important questions.

  • How do the users navigate in general through a configurator?
  • How do they configure the cars online?
  • What information do they need before / during / after the configuration?
  • How shall this information be displayed?
  • How do they react if they have to enter their data to register onto the server (in order to save the configuration)?
  • Which navigational concept, which interaction design and which screen layout may be used in 2 or 5 or 10 years?
  • How do the competitors of our client develop their car configurators? What can our client learn from them?

Methodology

The project was conducted in Dahlian, China. It involved two phases:

  1. Expert review on 5 car configurators: The one from our client and 4 competitors (most important ones). Evaluating general usability, navigational concept, interaction design etc.
    • For the expert review we did this with two simultaneous expert reviewers to review the application.
    • Provided the criteria as the basis for the review.
    • Provided the definitions (usability issues severity guidelines that is usually followed).
    • Provided the heuristics.
    • Compiled, aggregating and prioritizing all issues together from all reviewers.
    • The Client’s configurator will be available online.
    • Provided the certain key tasks and strategic assumptions concerning the development of the configurators.

  2. User Test with 20 or 30 participants (users will test configurator of the Client and one or two configurators of competitors). Length of interview: 90 minutes, one-to-one session, scenario based, moderator and observer needed.

Deliverables

  • Template for the expert review
  • Recruitment questionnaire
  • Guide / scenarios for the sessions
  • Detailed briefing
  • Template for the analysis
