The Year 2003 was the year of SARS for Singapore. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a respiratory or airways infection that has recently been reported in a number of regions, including Singapore. It is a new type of atypical pneumonia* that infects the lungs and is, caused by a new strain of virus called the coronavirus., which is from the same family of viruses that causes the common cold.
MicroUsability played a part in the prevention of SARS, by working with the Ministry of Health to achieve these objectives through the official SARS website:
- To help alleviate public fears and doubts about SARS.
- To motivate people to help prevent further spread of SARS.
There were several hurdles that made the task to achieve objectives much more complex:
- There were multiple user groups with diverse information requirements: schools, businesses, travelers, agents, parents etc.
- The data was highly dynamic.

- Designed a plan that anticipates changes in information needs and scales over time.
- Established clear entry-points for each user group on the website.
- Re-vamped the information architeture: to create minimum drill-downs by putting the most critical information made highly visible.
- Allowed users the ability to save, print and share information, thus helping spread information indirectly.
